Do you have a family history of cancer, and if so, have you ever wondered whether you may be at increased risk of developing a certain cancer? Genes play a significant role in cancer development, both by being inherited and by developing mutations during a person’s lifetime. Genetic testing can reveal inherited mutations that may increase your cancer risk, allowing for proactive measures like tailored screening and preventative strategies.
Wayland Personal Physicians is pleased to now offer the Myriad MyRisk Hereditary Cancer Test. MyRisk is a genetic test that evaluates 48 genes to determine your risk of developing 11 different types of hereditary cancer, including breast, uterine, prostate and colorectal cancer. When coupled with RiskScore®, it can also assess your five-year and lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.
This test itself is performed through a simple blood sample, and for eligible patients, it is fully reimbursed by insurance companies.
The genetic insights provided by the MyRisk test can help to empower you to form a personalized medical management plan with your physician – one that is individualized to your own risks. Using the information provided by the results, you and your physician can formulate a plan to help manage and reduce any elevated risk that may be identified. Even if the results do not show that you have inherited a genetic mutation, if you are identified as higher-than-average risk for certain types of cancers, the results will provide clinically actionable results that can help you & your physician reduce your risks for developing certain cancers.
We encourage you to schedule an appointment with your Wayland Personal Physician to explore whether having the Myriad genetics tests performed is appropriate for you and your health!
